How to make a video demonstration of your software

A video demonstration proves a product does what it claims by showing it being used, screen by screen, with someone explaining each step. Below are the six steps to make one by hand, which takes an afternoon, and on each step the shortcut InstaDemo takes when you give it the URL instead, which takes a few minutes.

The shortcut: generate it from the URL

Paste the address of the product or website. InstaDemo picks the pages, writes the narration, films the real screens and reads the script over them. You see the script before anything is recorded.

The six steps, done by hand

This is the whole process. Follow it with a screen recorder and an editor and you will have a decent demonstration in two or three hours. The orange line under each step is what changes when the URL does the work.

  1. 1

    Decide what the demonstration proves

Write one sentence: "after watching, the viewer knows the product can ___." Everything that does not serve that sentence is cut. Pick the three screens that prove it.

With InstaDemo: InstaDemo crawls the site and proposes the pages; you tick the ones that matter.

  2. 2

Write the script before recording anything

One or two spoken sentences per screen, benefit first. Read it aloud and time it: 150 words is about a minute. Cut until it fits the length you want.

With InstaDemo: An AI drafts the script from what is on the pages. Edit it, or paste your own and it is read word for word.

  3. 3

    Prepare the product

Use realistic sample data, close other tabs, hide notifications, set the browser window to 1920 by 1080 and zoom so the text is legible on a phone.

With InstaDemo: A headless browser films the live pages at 1080p with the cursor, scroll and zoom directed for you.

  4. 4

    Record the screen

Follow the script one screen at a time and pause between scenes so the cuts are clean. Record more than you need; it is easier to trim than to re-record.

With InstaDemo: Recording, scene by scene, is the part the engine does on its own.

  5. 5

    Record the narration

Separately from the screen, in a quiet room, one scene per take. Reading over the finished footage is easier than talking while you click.

With InstaDemo: A narrator voice reads each scene; 14 voices in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian.

  6. 6

    Assemble, caption, export

Line each narration take up with its scene, trim the gaps, add captions for viewers on mute, add a closing call to action, export an MP4 (H.264, 1080p).

With InstaDemo: ffmpeg merges the scenes, burns in captions, adds the outro and returns the MP4 with a share link.

Demonstration, demo video, tutorial: which one you need

Video demonstration

Proves it works. Shows the real product completing a real task, start to finish. 1 to 2 minutes. For evaluators, procurement, a client sign-off.

Demo video

Sells why it matters. Leads with the outcome, shows three moments, ends with one call to action. Under 90 seconds. For a landing page or a cold email. Examples →

Tutorial

Teaches one task to someone who already uses the product. As long as it needs to be, every click shown. For a help centre or onboarding.

InstaDemo makes the first two from a URL. The script decides which one you get: a demonstration script walks the task, a demo script sells the result, and you can edit either before it is recorded.

Questions people ask

What is a video demonstration?

A recorded video that shows a product, piece of software or process being used, step by step, with narration explaining each step. It differs from a demo video mainly in intent: a demonstration proves the thing works and shows how, while a marketing demo video sells why it matters. The best ones do both in under two minutes.

How do I make a video demonstration of software?

Decide the one thing the video must prove, write a short script (about 150 words a minute), prepare the product with clean sample data, record the screen scene by scene, record the narration separately, then assemble, caption and export an MP4. Or paste the product's URL into InstaDemo and have those steps generated, with the script shown to you for approval first.

What software do I need to make a video demonstration?

For the manual route: a screen recorder (Loom, OBS or the one built into your OS), a microphone, and a video editor to assemble and caption. For the generated route: a browser. InstaDemo records, narrates, captions and exports from the URL, and the Autopilot extension handles products behind a login.

How long should a video demonstration be?

Long enough to prove the one thing it set out to prove and no longer. For a product that is 60 to 120 seconds. A demonstration of one specific feature for existing users can be 30 seconds. Past three minutes, split it into separate videos.

Can I make a video demonstration for free?

Yes. InstaDemo's free plan makes 10 demos a month at 480p with a watermark and a 45-second cap. A finished HD version of one demo is $5.99 one-time, and Pro is $19 a month for 50 demos in 1080p with no watermark or cap.
